If your child rides a bus, this one's for you. The district is down as many as 17 drivers compared with the start of the year, leaving some routes unable to run reliably. Parents are finding other ways to get their kids to school.

The Wilson County School Board said the district needs more bus drivers after several quit this year.

17fewer drivers, at most, than at the start of the school year

spokesman Bart Barker said the district is down "upwards of 17 drivers."

  • Entry-level pay: about $22 an hour
  • Under consideration: a bonus or other perks
  • Also considered: more attendants on buses to manage conduct

Student behavior on buses is also pushing drivers out. Barker said one of the biggest helps costs the district nothing: families talking with their kids about it, so they know there will be "consequences at home" for being unruly. He called the job "a very meaningful way to spend your day." Want to apply? Wilson County Schools has a Transportation page for that.

$22an hour, about, is where entry-level driver pay starts

The job also comes with irregular hours and challenges, including student behavior on buses.
